New Exhibitions in the Arts Alley District

The Arts Alley District, The Modbo and S.P.Q.R., are delighted to present two new shows opening March 11th, 2011.  The Modbo will feature Picture Postcards, a solo show by Lindsay Hand.  S.P.Q.R. will house Young Hot Sh*ts 2, an exhibit of seven local artists all under the age of 22.  Opening receptions begin at 5:30 pm on March 11th and continue until midnight.  The show runs through Friday, April 1st.

Lindsay Hand’s latest body of work, Picture Postcards, was inspired by two albums of photographs that she found at a thrift store.  Packed with photos and carefully assembled, the albums held images from the early 40s to early 50s.  Hand was moved by the images, the owner of which she was never able to ascertain. Picture Postcards is the result of living in the album owner’s world for a little while and exploring the mystery of their identity.

Lindsay Hand is an artist living and working in Colorado Springs, and is currently a member of The Modbo Collective.  Although predominantly self taught, Hand considers with gratitude a great number of friends, peers and mentors among her teachers.  The past two years have been dedicated to oil painting after a brief study at the Art Students League of Denver under Joshua Falik in 2008.  Using a muted color palate inspired by the Old Masters, Hand’s subjects include portraiture, mid-twentieth century images reinterpreted or delving deeper into that obsession with generations past, taking inspiration from the forgotten snapshots that persons unknown have left behind and a series of pieces featuring her own family’s history.  A strong believer in the healing power of art, Hand has been a volunteer, teacher and facilitator since 2005 with the nonprofit organization, FutureSelf, which invites transformation through the Arts to the youth of Colorado Springs.

This year’s Young Hot Sh*ts, showing in S.P.Q.R., introduces 7 great young artists to the Colorado Springs art community.
